PP STRAPPING BAND
| Previous | 2 / 6 | Next |
PP strapping band (also known as polypropylene strapping, hand-grade PP strap, manual PP strap, or polypropylene banding) is a flat, uniaxially oriented polypropylene plastic strap wound into a coil or onto a core, designed for manual or hand-tool strapping operations to bundle, secure, reinforce, and unitise products, cartons, and loads during packaging, storage, and transportation. As the most widely used and economical plastic strapping material available, hand-grade PP strapping band is an essential consumable across virtually every industry sector — from small businesses and retail operations to large-scale warehousing, manufacturing, and export packaging environments — wherever a fast, cost-effective, and reliable method of securing goods is required without the need for strapping machinery.
Key Characteristics
- Material: Oriented polypropylene (OPP) — uniaxially stretched for enhanced tensile strength
- Surface finish: Embossed (standard); smooth or multi-filament also available
- Color: Transparent / natural (standard); black, white, blue, green, red, yellow also available
- Joint method: Metal buckle; plastic clip; or heat seal with manual tool
- Format: Hand coil; cardboard core; or centre-pull dispenser box
- Elongation: Medium — provides elastic recovery maintaining strap tension under load
- Tearability: Cannot be hand-torn — requires strapping cutter, scissors, or blade
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Material | Oriented Polypropylene (OPP) |
| Strap width | 6, 9, 12, 15, 16, 19 mm |
| Strap thickness | 0.35 – 0.90 mm |
Strap Width & Application Guide
| Strap Width | Tensile Strength Range | Recommended Load | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | 70 – 100 kg | Up to 15 kg | Lightweight bundling; small parcels; newspapers |
| 9 mm | 100 – 150 kg | Up to 25 kg | Light carton sealing; small package bundling |
| 12 mm | 150 – 220 kg | Up to 50 kg | General carton strapping; medium load bundling |
| 15 – 16 mm | 220 – 280 kg | Up to 100 kg | Heavy carton sealing; pallet hand strapping |
| 19 mm | 280 – 350 kg | Up to 150 kg | Heavy-duty pallet unitising; industrial bundling |
Key Performance Properties
- Good tensile strength — oriented PP construction provides reliable resistance to tension forces along strap length
- Elastic elongation recovery — strap maintains tension if load settles, compresses, or shifts slightly in transit
- Lightweight and portable — coil format easy to carry and use anywhere without equipment
- No sharp edges — completely safe to handle and remove; no cut hazard unlike steel strapping
- Moisture resistant — PP is fully unaffected by rain, humidity, and wet storage conditions
- Chemical resistant — resists most acids, alkalis, oils, and mild industrial solvents
- UV-resistant grades available — stabilised for outdoor storage and transit applications
- Cost-effective — lowest cost strapping material available per metre
- Easy to use — hand application requires minimal skill and training
- Recyclable — polypropylene is widely recyclable under industrial plastic waste streams
- No corrosion — unlike steel strapping; will not rust or stain packaged goods
- Safe for food contact packaging — no metal contamination risk; food-grade grades available
- Colour-coded options — wide colour range supports visual load identification systems
