SEMI-AUTO PP STRAPPING BAND
| Previous | 1 / 6 | Next |
Semi auto PP strapping band (also known as semi-automatic polypropylene strapping, PP strap, or machine-grade polypropylene banding) is a continuous length of flat polypropylene (PP) plastic strapping wound onto a machine-compatible core, specifically engineered for use with semi-automatic strapping machines to bundle, unitise, reinforce, and secure products, cartons, and palletised loads during storage and transportation. Polypropylene strapping is the most widely used plastic strapping material in the packaging industry, offering an economical, lightweight, and versatile alternative to steel strapping for light to medium-duty bundling and carton sealing applications across virtually every industry sector.
Key Characteristics
- Material: Oriented polypropylene (OPP) — uniaxially stretched for high tensile strength
- Surface finish: Embossed, smooth, or multi-filament textured
- Color: Transparent / natural (standard); black, white, blue, green, red, yellow also available
- Joint method: Heat seal (friction weld) or metal clip seal — machine dependent
- Core: Machine-compatible cardboard or plastic core
- Elongation: Medium — provides elastic recovery under load
- Tearability: Cannot be hand-torn — requires strapping cutter or blade
Material : Oriented Polypropylene (OPP)
Strap width : 5, 6, 9, 12, 15, 16, 19 mm
Strap thickness : 0.40 – 1.05 mm
Tensile strength : 90 – 400 kg (width and thickness dependent)
Strap Width & Application Guide
| Strap Width | Tensile Strength Range | Best Application |
|---|---|---|
| 5 – 6 mm | 90 – 120 kg | Lightweight bundling; newspapers; small parcels |
| 9 mm | 120 – 180 kg | Light carton sealing; small box strapping |
| 12 mm | 180 – 250 kg | General carton strapping; medium-weight loads |
| 15 – 16 mm | 250 – 320 kg | Heavy carton sealing; pallet strapping |
| 19 mm | 320 – 400 kg | Heavy-duty pallet unitising; industrial bundling |
Thickness & Performance Relationship
| Thickness | Strength | Elongation | Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.40 – 0.55 mm | Lower | Higher | Lower | Light duty; carton sealing |
| 0.56 – 0.70 mm | Medium | Medium | Medium | General purpose strapping |
| 0.71 – 0.90 mm | High | Lower | Higher | Heavy carton; pallet strapping |
| 0.91 – 1.05 mm | Very High | Lowest | Highest | Heavy-duty industrial loads |
Key Performance Properties
- High tensile strength — oriented PP provides excellent resistance to tension forces along strap length
- Good elongation recovery — elastic recovery maintains strap tension if load settles or shifts slightly during transit
- Lightweight — significantly lighter than steel strapping of equivalent strength; reduces package weight
- No sharp edges — safe to handle; no cut hazard on removal unlike steel strapping
- Moisture resistant — PP is unaffected by rain, humidity, and water exposure
- Chemical resistant — resists most acids, alkalis, and mild solvents
- UV resistant grades — stabilised grades maintain strength under prolonged outdoor sun exposure
- Cost-effective — lower material cost per metre than PET or steel strapping
- Clean sealing — heat seal leaves no metal parts; safe for food and pharmaceutical packaging
- Recyclable — polypropylene is recyclable under standard plastic waste streams
- Consistent feed — machine-wound rolls provide smooth, consistent strap feed without tangling
